What is CBD balm?

CBD balm is a type of CBD product that has been formulated to apply topically, either to soothe and nourish the skin or ease muscles and joints. Or both, in some cases! It’s usually made by infusing CBD oil into a blend of solid oils, such as coconut. Many CBD balms have other ingredients added to help target specific needs, like menthol or ginger essential oils.

Some CBD balms have permeation enhancers added, which transforms a product from one which has an effect on the surface layer(s) of the skin, to one which works transdermally, being absorbed through the skin, into deeper muscle tissue, and even into the bloodstream.

The CBD itself is suitable for all skin types and interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors we have in our skin cells, muscles, joints, and beyond to help restore and maintain balance throughout the body. This includes inflammation responses and the normal function of the waterproof skin barrier which, when not functioning as it should, can cause inflammation, dryness, visible signs of ageing, a sebum imbalance, itching, and more uncomfortable symptoms synonymous with skin issues.

CBD balm uses

The use of CBD balm largely depends on what it’s made out of. Some are designed to nourish, hydrate, and protect the skin, perhaps including ingredients such as rosehip oil or hyaluronic acid. Others are blended with cooling or warming essential oils or anti-inflammatories to help relax muscles after a workout or diminish aches and pains. Some are multi-use and these types of CBD balm are often real ‘desert island’ products that can be used topically, transdermally, and occasionally even as a hair mask! Always check the directions for use on the packaging to find out how to get the most out of your CBD balm.

CBD lip balm

As well as skin and muscle balms, there are also many CBD lip balms available to buy in shops and online. These are similar to other CBD balms, however, ingredients added will have been selected as appropriate for use on your lips (taking into consideration that some is likely to go into your mouth by accident). Not all ingredients used in skin and muscle balms would be appropriate for this, as many additions would not do your lips many favours. CBD lip balm, on the other hand, will have ingredients added that have been selected to hydrate, nourish and soothe that especially sensitive skin.

CBD lip balm benefits

You may be unsurprised to read at this point that the skin on your lips also has endocannabinoid receptors! So boosting the activation of these receptors using phytocannabinoids, like CBD, is a great idea to help rebalance any issues. When the ECS is activated, whether that’s on your lips or inside your body, this triggers many different effects including reduced cutaneous inflammation and accelerated wound healing. This is particularly useful to know if you suffer from sore, dry, chapped lips.

CBD muscle balm

CBD muscle balm will only work if it’s a transdermal formulation, which can permeate through the top three layers of skin, into muscles, joints, and the bloodstream. If you’re unsure, it’s always worth asking the CBD brand to check – but most CBD balms are inherently transdermal as certain terpenes in the cannabis (or hemp) plant act as natural permeation enhancers. You may also see additional ingredients of fatty acids and alcohols such as glycol included for this purpose.

CBD muscle balm benefits

CBD balm is a pre and post-workout essential for many athletes, fitness fanatics, and people struggling with muscle pain for any other reason. Numerous studies have indicated that the activation of the ECS, alongside the direct activation of serotonin and vanilloid receptors (two more things the CBD molecule does in the body!), can produce anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, as well as reduce muscle spasticity and accelerate muscle recovery via transdermal and internal products.

CBD Balm – FAQ

How fast does CBD balm work?

Topically, CBD balm can get to work on targeted areas of the skin right away! Transdermally, it can take a little longer but many people say they notice results within half an hour. However, there’s very little research into the bioavailability of CBD balm and how long it takes to gradually release cannabinoids into the bloodstream to reach the peripheral nervous system and muscle tissue. It’s mostly anecdotal for now, but the anecdotes are very positive and note speedy relief.

Can you use CBD balm for pain?

Many people all over the world use CBD balm for pain, and there is a lot of interesting research available to support the efficacy of this. However, no CBD brand is permitted to sell CBD products as a treatment or suggest that a CBD balm might be a good pain relief option. You’ll just have to try it and see for yourself!

Does CBD balm help with anxiety?

Both the CBD oil used in CBD balm and additional essential oils, such as lavender and bergamot, are well documented as being used to help with anxiety. Plenty of users claim that applying CBD balm can provide a wash of calm and even ease tension headaches when gently massaged into the temples. Most people who are targeting anxiety opt for CBD for internal use (like oral drops, gummies, or capsules), but there’s no reason you shouldn’t try both for a holistic approach.

Can CBD balm help arthritis pain?

One of the most common reasons people use both topical CBD products (like CBD balm) and oral CBD supplements is for arthritis. There is certainly a lot of very exciting research going on into this condition and how cannabis (and cannabis-derived products) might help. As uncontrolled inflammation and systemic imbalances (in the immune system, digestive system, and more) are thought to be key contributing factors to certain types of arthritis, the involvement of the endocannabinoid system, which regulates all these other systems, seems very likely. By supporting your endocannabinoid system, you support the proper function of all areas and processes of the body.

Can I use CBD balm on my dog?

It is not advisable to use CBD balm on your dog as lots of the essential oils often added are toxic to animals.
